Today, we honor the life and legacy of Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawai‘i's last reigning monarch, whose spirit continues to inspire and guide us. Born on September 2, 1838, she was not only a beloved queen but also a gifted composer, author, and advocate for her people.

Queen Liliʻuokalani’s deep love for Hawai‘i and its people is evident in her life's work. She composed over 150 songs, including the famous "Aloha ʻOe," which remains a symbol of Hawaiian culture and aloha spirit. Her tireless efforts to preserve the sovereignty of Hawai‘i and her dedication to education and the well-being of her people reflect her unwavering commitment to her homeland.

In the spirit of Waldorf education, we celebrate not only her contributions to the arts and culture but also her resilience and compassion. Her legacy teaches us the importance of standing firm in our values, caring for our community, and nurturing the beauty that lies within each of us. Let us remember Queen Liliʻuokalani today and always, as we strive to live in harmony with the land, embrace our cultural heritage, and share the aloha spirit with the world.

Just as Waldorf education encourages the development of the whole child, Foodland’s GIVE ALOHA campaign encourages the flourishing of the entire community.

We are happy to invite you to join the Honolulu Waldorf School’s Parent Child Class for Quarter 1 of the 2024-2025 School Year, and look forward to welcoming you and your young child to our campus. Our Parent Child Classes will begin the week of Monday, September 2, and will run through Friday, October 25. (no classes on holidays, please see registration form for details)

During the First Quarter, classes are held Monday - Friday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, excluding holidays. Space is limited to 8 families and will be filled on a first-paid, first-served basis. As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islande

As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we also want to recognize the significant contributions of more recent native Hawaiians to the cultural, political, and social landscape of Hawaii and the United States.

One individual worth celebrating is Patsy Matsu Mink (née Takemoto; December 6, 1927 – September 28, 2002), a native Hawaiian who became the first woman of color and Asian American woman elected to the United States Congress. Mink was a trailblazer for women's rights and civil rights, and she authored the landmark Title IX legislation that prohibited gender discrimination in education and athletics.

In addition to her work in Congress, Mink was also a passionate advocate for education and worked to increase access to education for students of all backgrounds. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of young people to pursue their dreams and fight for social justice.

Let's honor the memory and contributions of Patsy Mink and all native Hawaiians this month by learning more about their history and culture, and by continuing to work towards a more just and equitable society.

At HWS, we hold the well-being and blossoming of our young ones close to our hearts, and we seek to provide an education that gently nourishes their entire being—body, mind, and spirit. Wednesday evening we celebrate our Grade 6 students in our Grade 6 Knighting Ceremony, as they embark on the next chapter of their journey, newly knighted and ready to take on the world! During this special ceremony, each student was recognized for their dedication and accomplishments in community service, thoughtful interviews, and heartfelt presentations. Guided by the support of their teachers and parents, our young knights received their titles with grace and pride.

This meaningful rite of passage marks a significant moment of growth, reflection, and empowerment. On Wednesday we celebrated our May Day festival, also known as Lei Day in Hawai‘i, with our school community! The spirit of aloha filled the air as we came together to honor our island heritage and the beauty of spring. The children adorned themselves with colorful leis they crafted, wore beautiful costumes, and performed hula to the rhythm of beautiful live Hawaiian music.

Our celebration also included sharing traditional songs and stories, making lei, and connecting with one another under the warm sunshine as everyone helped to create the beautiful backdrop and stage. It was a day of togetherness, gratitude, and appreciation for the natural world around us. Mahalo to everyone who joined us for this special day of joy and community! Let's carry the spirit of Lei Day with us throughout the season.
