This week, our Honolulu Waldorf School community will gather for The Festival of Courage (Michaelmas), a decades-old tradition at HWS that unites us in celebration and reflection.

With themes of courage, facing our fears, finding balance between light and dark, and gratitude for the harvest season, this festival honors the strength within each of us as we meet challenges, both seen and unseen.

Our celebration will include music, a pageant, and shared food, as well as the much-anticipated appearance of our mighty dragon 🐉. It’s a day filled with symbolism, beauty, and the joyful spirit of community.

Though small in number, our Grade 8 graduates carry immense light, courage, and character. Each one of them has journeyed through these formative years with heart, perseverance, and a growing sense of purpose. As they step forward into the next chapter of life, we, the faculty, staff, and community, stand in deep admiration and pride. They have made our school brighter with their presence, and we know they will continue to bring goodness into the world. With gratitude for the paths they’ve walked and excitement for the journeys ahead, we send them forth wrapped in aloha. Congratulations, dear graduates. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii and the Pacific through institutions like the Bishop Museum.

Founded in 1889, the Bishop Museum has played a vital role in preserving and sharing the history, culture, and traditions of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. It holds one of the world’s most significant collections of Polynesian and Hawaiian artifacts, and its exhibits offer visitors a chance to connect with the deep, vibrant stories that have shaped our island home.

This month, we encourage our community to explore the museum’s treasures and learn more about the indigenous cultures and histories that continue to inspire and guide us. The Bishop Museum is a beacon of knowledge and cultural preservation, reminding us of the importance of honoring and protecting our shared heritage.

Happy Children’s Day – Kodomo no Hi
Today, on the joyful occasion of Kodomo no Hi, we celebrate the strength, health, and radiant spirit of our children. Vibrant Koinobori streamers—carp-shaped flags—are flown to honor the courage and resilience of youth. Like the determined carp swimming upstream, our children inspire us with their perseverance, growth, and boundless potential.

At Honolulu Waldorf School, we hold the well-being and blossoming of our young ones close to our hearts. Rooted in reverence and rhythm, our education seeks to gently nourish the whole child—body, mind, and spirit—guiding each toward their fullest unfolding.

To mark this special day, our Grade 4 students dressed in traditional attire and lovingly shared mochi with every class, from Early Childhood through the Grades. In this simple act of generosity, they carried the spirit of community, joy, and aloha throughout our campus.

As we honor Children’s Day, may we all remember the sacred responsibility we share in nurturing the light within each child. Today and always, we send our warmest wishes to the children of our community and beyond—may they grow in joy, courage, and a bright sense of purpose.
