Happy Children’s Day – Kodomo no Hi Today, on Happy Children’s Day – Kodomo no Hi
Today, on the joyful occasion of Kodomo no Hi, we celebrate the strength, health, and radiant spirit of our children. Vibrant Koinobori streamers—carp-shaped flags—are flown to honor the courage and resilience of youth. Like the determined carp swimming upstream, our children inspire us with their perseverance, growth, and boundless potential.

At Honolulu Waldorf School, we hold the well-being and blossoming of our young ones close to our hearts. Rooted in reverence and rhythm, our education seeks to gently nourish the whole child—body, mind, and spirit—guiding each toward their fullest unfolding.

To mark this special day, our Grade 4 students dressed in traditional attire and lovingly shared mochi with every class, from Early Childhood through the Grades. In this simple act of generosity, they carried the spirit of community, joy, and aloha throughout our campus.

As we honor Children’s Day, may we all remember the sacred responsibility we share in nurturing the light within each child. Today and always, we send our warmest wishes to the children of our community and beyond—may they grow in joy, courage, and a bright sense of purpose.

Yesterday, our campus blossomed with the colors, s Yesterday, our campus blossomed with the colors, songs, and spirit of May Day, which is Lei Day in Hawai'i Nei. Our community gathered in celebration as our Grades 1 through 8 students, adorned in vibrant Lei Day attire, shared the gift of hula and honored the deep beauty of Hawaiian culture.

As the breeze carried the rhythm of beautiful music and the scent of fresh lei through our schoolyard, hearts swayed as gracefully as our keiki.

In the Waldorf spirit of reverence, rhythm, and joy, we give thanks for this moment of connection—to the ‘āina, to our ancestors, and to one another.

“E Hawai‘i, aloha ē.”
Beloved Hawai‘i, we hold you in our hearts.

Book Study Reflections: The Anxious Generation – Book Study Reflections: The Anxious Generation – Section 4
“We need to rebuild childhood, not just restrict smartphones.” Today marked the final gathering of our community book study group as we completed Section 4 of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. This section, focused on solutions and pathways forward, felt especially resonant for our Honolulu Waldorf School community.

We explored how rebuilding childhood means not only creating screen-free zones but actively cultivating rich, real-world experiences that help our children grow in courage, confidence, and connection. Haidt’s call for more independence, more play, and stronger community bonds mirrors much of what we hold dear in Waldorf education — from daily rhythms rooted in nature, to unhurried time outdoors, to the cultivation of deep human relationships.

This final conversation left us feeling both grounded and galvanized. There is no single fix, but as a community of thoughtful, loving adults, we can co-create a culture of care; one where children thrive not despite the modern world, but because we’ve reshaped it together.

With gratitude to everyone who joined us for this journey. Let’s continue weaving these insights into the fabric of our daily lives — hand in hand, heart to heart.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of a beloved member of our community, Robert Witt.

Robert began his Waldorf journey at the Detroit Waldorf School and later became Honolulu Waldorf School’s first administrator in the 1980s. His vision and steady leadership helped lay the foundation for the school we know today. As a devoted parent to sons Eli and Nathan, Robert’s bond with HWS grew even deeper, and he remained a guiding presence for decades.

In a moving gesture of love, Robert donated the play structures in our big yard in memory of his beloved son, Eli Witt—a gift that continues to bring joy and laughter to our students every day. Robert was also an animal lover who introduced us to Manu, our sweet therapy dog. During the 2018–2019 school year, he served as Interim Head of School with Roberta Bishop, and remained a comforting presence on campus. Many students fondly remember “Uncle Robert” walking the halls with Manu or attending school events with his signature warm smile and kind words.

Beyond our campus, Robert shaped education across Hawai‘i. As founding Executive Director of the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) from 1989 to 2014, he championed accreditation efforts with WASC and supported professional development for educators statewide. He also co-founded Mālama Honua Public Charter School with Nainoa Thompson, furthering culturally grounded, place-based learning for future generations.

Robert’s legacy is one of leadership, mentorship, and heart. He inspired countless educators and touched the lives of students across the islands. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Robert’s family and to all who loved him. A celebration of life will be held at HWS in May; details to come.

Nurturing Wholeness in Childhood - As we journey t Nurturing Wholeness in Childhood - As we journey through our all-school book study of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, we pause to reflect on the profound shifts in childhood over the past two decades. Haidt outlines Four Foundational Harms of a phone-based childhood - challenges that deeply impact a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development:
*	Loss of Play-Based Exploration - Free, unstructured play is how children learn to take risks, solve problems, and build resilience. A childhood spent primarily on screens replaces hands-on discovery with passive consumption, limiting the growth of essential life skills.
*	Disrupted Sleep and Well-Being - Restful sleep is the foundation of a healthy mind and body. The blue light of screens, the endless scroll, and the emotional intensity of social media often interfere with deep rest, leaving children more vulnerable to anxiety and stress.
*	Weakened Social Bonds - True connection is built through shared experiences, eye contact, and the subtle art of reading emotions. When relationships shift to digital spaces, children miss out on the deep, in-person interactions that cultivate empathy and understanding.
*	Increased Anxiety and Depression - A phone-based childhood often leads to isolation, comparison, and overstimulation - creating an environment where anxiety thrives. Without real-world experiences to ground them, children struggle to develop confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.

At our school, we believe in a childhood rooted in presence - where children are encouraged to explore, connect, and grow in ways that honor their natural development. Through play, storytelling, movement, and hands-on learning, we nurture the resilience and joy that come from being truly engaged with the world.

Join us in embracing the power of presence. Learn more about our book study and discover how Waldorf education supports children’s growth. Visit our website or schedule a tour today.

Happy Hinamatsuri from Honolulu Waldorf School! To Happy Hinamatsuri from Honolulu Waldorf School! Today, our Grade 4 students dressed in traditional attire, sang a sweet Japanese song, and joyfully shared butter mochi with the entire school—from our littlest Lama children to our Grade 8 students, who are growing into their own unique strength and grace. We are so grateful to Mie Sensei and our wonderful parent volunteers for bringing this cherished tradition to life. Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day, is a celebration of love, beauty, and happiness—a moment to honor the cultural traditions that connect us and to recognize the contributions of the Japanese community in Hawai‘i. May this day remind us to celebrate the kindness, strength, and spirit of the girls and women in our lives. Happy Girls’ Day!
