Grade 4 Field Trip

Every year the Fourth Grade has Hawaiian Studies which includes a field trip to cultural sites along the windward coast. High school art instructor and award winning author of "Ancient Sites of Oʻahu" Van James has guided these field trips for many years, telling stories of the wahi pana at Huilua Fishpond and Kapaʻeleʻele Koʻa by Kahana Bay, Kauhiʻikamakaokalani (the Crouching Lion), and Mokoliʻi (Chinaman's Hat) at Kualoa. Yuka Otaka's Fourth Grade class is seen here examining the rock wall construction of Huilua Fishpond.

7th/8th Grade Vs Faculty Volleyball Game

On Friday April 12th, the 7th and 8th graders were ready to take on all HWS teachers at the semi-annual faculty versus students volleyball game held on the lower school campus. These students had just finished a month long volleyball block in movement class, and were confident in showcasing their newly acquired skills.  Intense serving, passing and even blocking were all a part of this competition.

The game got off to an exciting start with grades 1-6 watching in eager anticipation. Some lowerclassmen were cheering for their older counter parts but many were rooting for their favorite teachers and faculty members. Some students created signs and came up with cheers to add to the exciting atmosphere.

Katelyn Ching, the school’s pianist, was clearly the standout for the faculty team, as she was able to play tough defense against the fierce serving from the students. Ms. Ching helped the teachers to an early lead and eventual first game win. But it didn’t take long for the 7th and 8th graders to rally and respond with a slew of points to give them an insurmountable score in the second game, allowing the students to win 20-13.

So the rivalry continues as the students prepare for the next meeting in the fall, when kickball becomes the game of choice.
