Dear HWS Parents,
It has been a great pleasure getting to know all of you over these past three years. I have loved meeting you at the gate and watching your children gleefully run in. And I have completely fallen in love with this school, this place, and its spirit.
As most of you know, this past year I was tending to my mother who was diagnosed with cancer and then suffered a heart attack. To do this I returned to Maui, spent three – four days per week on Oahu, and took a reduction in pay, thinking that I would work less. That did not happen, as I continued to work remotely and hold meetings via telephone and video conference. The situation has not been ideal for the school or for me, and the board has decided that we really need someone who can be at the school every day. I agree. As it does not appear that my situation will change in the near future, the board will be searching for a new Administrative Director to serve you and the school.
The school is in a wonderfully creative and rejuvenated place and I am sure you will feel this energy when you return to school in a couple of weeks. You will love working with our new Director of Advancement, Kat Fitzpatrick, and our new Business Manager, Tracy Packer. Kat has worked at two Waldorf schools, and Tracy has served us previously as the Business Manager. Both of them grew up in Hawaii. Our new faculty in the grades are positive, imaginative people with great enthusiasm and experience. And our high school will soon be brand new on the bottom floor, thanks to the tireless effort and leadership of Lynn Liverton, Judy Journeay, and the Godwises, along with many others.
In short, while this was unplanned, I think we are in good hands. We already started the process of searching for candidates and I will help with the transition when the new Administrative Director joins the school. I will begin the year with you (and look forward to doing so!), and am committed to helping the school as much as I can in this new chapter.
We are poised for a great new adventure!

Aloha Honolulu Waldorf Ohana,
My name is Erika Takahashi, and I have been fortunate to be a part of the Honolulu Waldorf School Community as a student, a participant in the parent/child class, and currently as a grades parent. Last year, I was also fortunate to serve as the Parent Hui chairperson and was invited to join the Board of Directors, where I was recently elected Board President. As a Board, we are so proud of this school and its many unique students and families. You make our community truly special. We are committed to maintaining and growing HWS, where children can learn through a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is rich and colorful. We are also committed to the whole health of our school and understand the need for transparency.
As many of you know, the Board is responsible for hiring and overseeing the Administrative Director of the school. We believe that Jocelyn is a strong, capable and understanding leader, and we are extremely grateful for the years she has contributed, and continues to dedicate, to the School. However, as much as we would like to have Jocelyn remain indefinitely, we are realists. Jocelyn needs to be based on Maui, and commuting between the islands is not ideal for her or our school. We have formed a search committee to find a new Administrative Director, to be hired as soon as possible. We don’t believe that this is a process to be rushed, and we are grateful that Jocelyn has graciously agreed to stay on as our Administrative Director during this time of transition, and she has agreed to assist in training a new AD once we identify the person.
We are also calling on you, our Waldorf community, to send us any suggestions you may have for our consideration, and to be supportive of the Board, and Jocelyn, through the transition. We thank you for your committed support so we can continue to provide the wonderful education we all expect the school to provide.
